Judy Singer, the sociologist who coined the term “neurodiversity” in the ’90s, has recently revealed herself as “gender-critical” on Twitter. After a backlash, she left Twitter, then returned with an apology, later retracting the apology. She has since been on and off Twitter and continues to express gender-critical views. Many people have tried to hold her to account on Twitter in a respectful way, and history tells us from other gender criticals that this often leads to claims of being “cancelled”. Yawn.
With autistic people six times more likely to identify as trans and many identifying as non-binary, this is an attack on a large part of our community. I don’t understand how you can supposedly champion and support the neurodivergent community when you show contempt for a significant part of it.
This has made me uncomfortable using the term “neurodiversity”, so from now on, I shall use “neurospicy” instead.
I’m not angry, just disappointed.
